Part-time Financial Controller (Maternity Cover)
We're working with a family-owned business in the creative sector to find a part-time Financial Controller to cover a 12-month maternity leave. It's 2 days a week on site near Radstock, paying £60,000 to £80,000 full-time equivalent (roughly £24,000 to £32,000 for the 2 days).
Why join our client?
The business has been going for more than 40 years and is still family-owned. Around 50 people work under one roof, from designers and project teams to the people who make and install the work, and between them they deliver over 200 projects a year for clients right across the UK. It's growing, it's making money, and a lot of the team have been there for years and grown their careers with it. Hours are flexible around a 10am to 3pm core, and plenty of people already work around school hours.
How you’ll make an impact
You'd be the technical lead in finance, reporting to the Head of Finance and working closely with the senior leadership team. Around 6 days a month go on the main business and around 2 on a smaller property business that sits alongside it. Payroll and the day-to-day bookkeeping sit with others, and there's around a month's handover with the current accountant, so you'll have time to find your feet before you're on your own.
- Produce accurate monthly management accounts and P&L, on time
- Run job costing and WIP across a busy book of live projects
- Allocate costs to the right projects and cost centres
- Prepare cash flow and support the annual budget and forecast
- Look after intercompany transactions with a sister business
- Present the numbers at the monthly leadership meeting, with the owner in the room
- Work with the external accountants on the year end
Why our client is excited about you
You'll be happy working on your own, and just as comfortable walking into a leadership meeting to explain why the numbers moved... because in a project business, they do move. It could suit you well if you're returning to work, already part time and looking to add another role to your week, easing towards retirement, or an experienced FC or finance manager who still enjoys being hands-on.
- ACCA, ACA or CIMA qualified, or QBE with a solid track record
- 3 to 5 years running month end in a similar role
- A real eye for detail, and good at managing your own time across a fixed number of days
- Able to explain the numbers to people who don't spend their day in spreadsheets
- Job costing or WIP experience in a project-based business would be a big help
What you’ll get in return
It's a part-time role with proper ownership of the numbers, in a friendly business full of creative people. The practical bits are...
- £60,000 to £80,000 FTE, roughly £24,000 to £32,000 for 2 days a week
- Paid by the hour, so when month end needs a longer day, you get paid for it
- Flexible hours around a 10am to 3pm core
- 12-month fixed-term contract, with around a month's handover
- 2 days a week on site near Radstock (you'll need a car, as there's no practical public transport)
- Interviews week commencing 26 October, starting mid-November 2026
We invite applications from all qualified candidates who believe they meet the requirements of the role, whilst supporting and promoting equality and diversity to create an inclusive working environment for all.
